Q: How long have you been an advisor in this area?
A: I started my financial advisory career in 1982. I worked with three large national financial companies until 1992 when I formed my own practice MAHY AND ASSOCIATES. My practice is focused upon identifying financial needs, finding opportunities and implementing solutions. The nature of long term planning and helping others has often led me to people with the commitment of philanthropic giving.
I have always been a volunteer for as long as I can remember. This includes past and present membership in three service organizations and volunteer and Director on several Non-profit organizations. Looking after the needs of others and volunteerism has always been a given in my family.
Q: Do you have experience advising clients who have arranged planned gifts? For how many years?
A: My first opportunity to explore planned giving was in 1983. Since that time I have assisted hundreds of people explore the opportunity to structure their financial affairs. Development of trusts, charitable annuities, and insurance products are a few of the solutions many donors have implemented. The process of making a gift is one that takes time and patience with the direct purpose of sharing or developing a personal legacy.
Q: Have you made arrangements for a personal planned gift?
A: I have assigned life insurance to a charitable organization as well as naming of a number of charitable organizations within my personal will. I have an annual commitment to a charitable foundation.
Q: What is your personal philosophy of philanthropy, and gift planning, specifically?
A: We are blessed living in the time and place we are today. There are others that are truly disadvantaged and need our help. I believe that we, as a caring and compassionate society, must take the time and make the effort to help make this a better world to live in. The alternative is chaos- not an appealing option.
Q: Are you a member of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners – locally and/or nationally? If so, for how long? If not, would you like more information about this organization?
A: I am a member of the National CAGP and first joined in 1997. I have been on the board of directors for the London CAGP Roundtable for the past two years.
