Gift from Dr. Katherine L. Morrison will promote an understanding of American culture, history and politics

leadership In the Faculty of Social Science, the Centre for American Studies promotes a greater understanding of American culture, history and politics. Established in 1984, the Centre offers a wide range of courses in American Studies and encourages research that is interdisciplinary in nature. Each year the Centre organizes a series of speakers, seminars and panels.

The election of President Obama in 2008 has confirmed Canada’s need to understand the United States and U.S.-Canada relations more fully. Western’s new President, Amit Chakma, is challenging the University to meet this challenge and encourage our students and graduates to become global leaders.

The Morrison Lecture allows the Centre for American Studies to bring renowned scholars to Western to speak on topics of interest like, “Hurricane Katrina and the Gulf South” and “America’s New President” while the Katherine and Russell Morrison Scholarships in American Studies were introduced in 2006 and support students working towards degrees in American Studies. Donors like Dr. Katherine L. Morrison help Western make a difference through the education of the next generation of global leaders, a generation of students who will move beyond our University’s and our country’s borders to become more socially aware and embrace the notion of global citizenship.
